As a visionary in the medical profession, Dr Gurm believes the advancement of healthcare requires an integration of both conventional medicine and evidence-informed naturopathic medicine, providing personalized care for her patients. A foundational component of this care model is to address both the disease itself, as well as the factors that contribute to health and disease – such as nutrition, diet, genetics, epigenetics, lifestyle and other factors including the mind-body connection. Dr. Gurm is among leading physicians and policy influencers that believe this personalized and whole-person approach represents the modern evidence-informed healthcare model – effectively replacing the historic disease-and- symptom-focused standard of care.
Dr. Gurm’s academic journey began at the University of British Columbia, where she completed her undergraduate degree in Cell Biology & Genetics and was a member of the varsity field hockey team. During that time, she was appointed to a 5-year clinical research position at the BC Cancer Agency, mentored by some of the top oncologists in the country.
Dr. Sharon Gurm BSc, ND, Naturopathic Physician received her Bachelor of Science Degree from UBC and her Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from CCNM in 2005. As an American board-certified Naturopathic Physician, Dr. Gurm is also a Fellow to the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology (FABNO). As the founder and medical director of Port Moody Health (since 2007), Dr. Gurm is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in whole-person integrative health care.
Dr. Gurm is also board certified in intravenous therapies, chelation therapy, oxidative therapies (ozone) and advanced injection therapies for chronic pain and regenerative treatments – such as prolotherapy, trigger point injections and cosmetic rejuvenation (Botox/Xeomin). She is also board-certified to prescribe pharmaceuticals (prescriptive authority).
In 2007, she founded Port Moody Health – Integrative Medicine & Cancer Care – a multidisciplinary and collaborative healthcare centre.
As a leader in the profession, Dr. Gurm and her clinic have gained worldwide attention for their progressive and innovative model of care and cancer treatments – such as loco-regional hyperthermia and photodynamic therapy. Dr. Gurm has had the privilege of training with renowned physicians and brilliant researchers, both locally and abroad. She regularly attends cancer conferences and visits hospitals in Germany, to keep pace with current trends in oncology. Her vast network consists of the top medical providers locally and around the world. She strongly believes that chronic conditions require collaborative care from a team of providers with a common goal to provide the best care for the patient.
Dr. Gurm is also a Clinical Professor instructor and the curriculum coordinator of the integrative oncology program at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine, teaching medical students the foundations of oncology and evidence-based integrative oncology. In 2017, the clinic was approved as an official CNME (Council for Naturopathic Medical Education) recognized site for post-graduate naturopathic oncology residency programs.
A frequent speaker at conferences, Dr. Gurm presents lectures on integrative oncology to medical professionals. In 2016, she became the first naturopathic physician invited to speak to the distinguished oncologists and care providers at the BC Children’s Hospital Oncology Group and collaborates with the clinicians and families who wish to safely integrate complementary cancer therapies.
In Feb 2019, Dr. Gurm was invited to lecture at the annual conference for the International Society of Laser Applications (ISLA), presenting her novel approach to managing specific cancer cases with a combination of photodynamic therapy, local regional hyperthermia and supportive IV therapies. Attendees included medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, naturopathic physicians and medical specialists from around the globe.
In addition, Dr. Gurm provides courses on advanced integrative oncology for Health Masters Live, a post graduate educational forum for integrative clinicians around the world.
In June 2019, Dr. Gurm was invited to be a panelist at the 48th Annual Orthomolecular Therapies Conference (OMT) as a leading naturopathic oncology physician for a public workshop and discussion on integrative oncology.
Dr. Gurm is a member and serves on the Board of Directors for the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians (OncANP). She is a member of the BC Naturopathic Association (BCNA), the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors (CAND), the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the Society of Integrative Oncology (SIO).
As a member of the UBC and U of T academic and varsity alumni, Dr. Gurm continues to lead a very active lifestyle. She enjoys running, yoga, pilates, cross-training and hiking. On weekends, the amazing west coast landscape is often the playground of outdoor activities with family and friends.
